Scott O'Neil steps down as president of MSG Sports

Scott O?Neil has resigned as president of MSG Sports, effective Sept. 14, after assuming the role in July 2008.

O?Neil, who previously worked at the NBA, has not discussed publicly the next step of his career.

The New York Times? Howard Beck writes O?Neil ?helped stabilize the Knicks after the controversy and tumult of the Isiah Thomas era.?

It is unclear why O'Neil, ?a rising star in the business,? stepped down so abruptly, the New York Daily News? Frank Isola writes. While one source tells the Daily News that O?Neil had differences with MSG chairman and Knicks owner James Dolan, others say O'Neil has ?bigger aspirations than running the World's Most Famous Arena and could eventually be making a return to the NBA league office.?

O?Neal worked primarily on the business side?such as sponsorships and the $900 million renovation of the arena?but had ?significant sway over the Knicks? personnel decisions, to the annoyance of the basketball operations staff,? according to Beck.

Isola notes O?Neil was instrumental in the trade that brought Carmelo Anthony to New York, as well as the Knicks? unsuccessful bid to acquire LeBron James.
