Prime Beef Festival Parade rolls along Broadway

The wailing of sirens, beating of several drum lines, uplifting songs of a Christian rock band, and even Scottish pipe band tunes were all sounds heard along Broadway as the Warren County Prime Beef Festival Parade rolled, tumbled, twirled and marched by.

It was warm in the sun late Wednesday afternoon, but could've been much warmer, said Amy Hare, of Roseville. Hare brought her five children to watch the parade.

"On the day of the Prime Beef Festival Parade, it's usually really hot, or it's raining," Hare said. "For the little ones, I think the tractors are their favorite part."

Older daughter Rebecca, 12, said her favorite part of the parade is "when the horses come through."

Parade participant Trent Beverley had children in mind too. Beverley did tricks on his bike.

"I was trying to attract attention to a church band. I like doing it to make the kids happy," Beverley said.

Beverley, 17, is a Monmouth-Roseville junior. He plans on riding in the parade again next year.

The band Beverley spoke of was representing Maple City Baptist Church. The Christian rock band and the white truck pulling their trailer attracted plenty of attention as they were both covered in mud.

Many local businesses threw out candy, which Jessica Ramirez, of Monmouth, said is her favorite part of the parade. She said chocolate is the favorite kind of candy she collected during the parade.

Her sister, Jessalynn, said she likes "watching all the colors of the cars" best.

The parade was not short of automobiles, including old-fashioned cars covering the rainbow in their coloring and big green tractors.

One non-profit organization, Mother to Mother, actually did the collecting for themselves, as they wheeled a wagon full of donated packs of diapers down Broadway for their Diaper Drive.

Warren County Republicans and Warren County Democrats both campaigned along the street, passing out sweets, and among the parties were candidates in upcoming elections ? Republican state Senate candidate Randy Frese and Democrat congressional hopeful Cheri Bustos.

Bustos, who won the Warren County Democratic primary with 80 percent voter support, said she was happy to attend the parade.

"I have a warm spot in my heart for Monmouth and Warren County. The people couldn't have been more welcoming. There were a lot of smiles, and a lot of very nice encouraging words all along the (parade) route," Bustos said.
