Home, Sweet Home

?The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.?
? Ralph Waldo Emerson

I live in a pretty traditional brick ranch house with a finished full basement.? It is an older house with drafty windows and pipes that have been known to leak.? The furnace and quite possibly the curtains in the living room have been here since the early 1960?s when the house was built.? We have a sliding glass door instead of French doors and tiny closets.? But this is the house my husband and I created in our minds years before we found it and this is where my heart is at peace.

When we moved to Asheville, NC, we started in a smaller house with a semi-shotgun floor plan.? We dreamed up a house with a kitchen that looked out onto the fenced-in back yard.? We talked of needing a basement and both a living room and a den.? We wanted our two kids to have their own bedrooms and also a space for visitors to stay and feel comfortable.? We wanted a dead-end, flat street for the kids to be able to play and room for a garden.

We followed many leads but could not find anything in our price range for years.? We had pretty much given up when we got a random call from our old realtor.? She had a house on a street I had actually driven down many times wishing for an opening.? It was actually in our price range and we snapped it up that day.? We have been here now for eight years.

Sometimes, though, I wish my house was bigger.? I want to redo the kitchen -? a vintage oven is much cooler sounding than it actually is when using it daily. I don?t think they had invented self-cleaning when this was produced! ? I want to add on to our bedroom so we could have ?grown-up? closets.? I would love to create a new front porch to replace our front stoop with the wobbly rail. Sometimes I wallow in what I wish would happen.

But this holiday season I had a moment of realization about my house. ? In the month of December, my house hosted a baby shower.? We all fit snugly in the living room but it lent a sense of togetherness and informality to the gathering.? A few weeks later, my house held 16 excited 13 year old girls for a holiday party.? They first took over the living room for a service activity and then descended into the basement for pizza and squealing and girl bonding.? The next day brought my parents and then my brother, his wife and their tween to stay for the holidays.? This requires a mattress on the floor and the pull out sofa in addition to the guest bedroom.

One night as I went to sleep on the pull-out sofa, I had this very important realization.? My house may not be big or fancy but over the past three weeks it has held so much joy and love.? It has been a place to welcome all sorts of friends and family.? People feel comfortable coming in and taking off their shoes and staying.? What a wonderful gift!

So this house has been our home for eight years now.? It has seen money and marriage ups and downs.? It has seen parenting moments both brilliant and questionable.? It has seen pets passed on and pets added to our brood. ? But mostly it has seen love and family and friendship.? At the end of the day, I know this place is enough for me because it can hold my family and my friends and the memories we create.

I wish you happiness in your home with your family and your friends.? Remember that shared memories are so much better for our happiness than anything you can buy.? Though I really need to replace those orange curtains in the living room?..

3D Brain (for iPad)

The free 3D Brain (for iPad) is an educational app that lets you peruse rotatable three-dimensional diagrams of the brain and its structures, complete with explanatory text and links to related articles. It?s a good overview of the brain, though the app?s navigation is a bit clunky.

The app's features and layout are the same as 3D Brain (for iPhone), though it benefits from the larger screen area, which permits you, for instance, to see most of a brain diagram plus the explanatory text at the same time. With the iPhone version, almost all the diagram is hidden behind the text.

A Translucent Virtual Brain
When you open the app, you'll see a page labeled Whole Brain, a depiction of the entire brain with its regions marked in different colors. It's a VR-style 3D illustration; by touching it and dragging your finger, you can rotate the image, revealing different regions. One side is translucent, so you can see interior structures. By stretching and pinching, you can expand or shrink the diagram.

On the right side of the screen is a taskbar, containing 5 buttons named Structures, Info, Labels, Search, and Help & About. Touching the Structures takes you to a drop-down menu that lets you access diagrams of the whole brain, lobes, or individual structures.

As an example of how it works, if you choose the second entry on the list, Basal Ganglia, it reveals an illustration with six substructures shown in different colors. Touching the Labels button on the taskbar names the structures: Globus Pallidus, Nucleus Accumbens, etc. Tapping the Info button calls up a wider bar on the right side of the screen, with text describing different aspects of the basal ganglia.? Whichever brain structure you call up, the textual information provided is in the same order: Overview, Case Study (or Studies), Associated Functions, Associated Cognitive Disorders, [Impairments] Associated with Damage, Substructures, Research Reviews, and Links.

Beyond the Imagery
Through links in the Research Reviews section, you can access PubMed abstracts of selected articles related to the brain region. The Links section includes the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) organizational tree for the structure in question, while BrainInfo takes you to images. Whichever of these links you click on, it takes you out of the app, which you'll have to relaunch. Then it will open to the Whole Brain opening page, where you?ll have to start from scratch.

As you'd expect, the Search function lets you locate and navigate to information related to a particular subject in the app's text.

Wishlist
One piece of interactivity that I would have liked to see is some response when you tap on specific areas in the brain diagrams. For instance, the Whole Brain view shows six areas of the brain, each depicted in a different color. Clicking on Labels from the taskbar identifies them as the Frontal Lobe, the Parietal Lobe, the Temporal Lobe, the Occipital Lobe, the Cerebellum, and the Brainstem. ?But if you touch on one of the areas or its label, nothing happens. Granted, you can access separate pages for these areas, as well as 22 brain structures or sub-structures, but you have to work from the drop-down menu accessible through the taskbar.

The 3D Brain app for the iPad provides a better user experience than when it is used on the iPhone, as it enables much more of the diagrams to be visible when text is also on the screen. The app could make better use of its interactivity by improving navigation between brain structure diagrams and linking to more content within the app instead of exiting it and having to start from the home screen. But, even as is, 3D Brain provides a good overview of the brain and its structures. Though best for life-science or neuroscience students, there is much that will be of interest to laypeople as well.

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after the shot, plans 2013 launch in smartphones and tablets

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after you take the shot, plans to launch in smartphones and tablets next year

Hoping for some after-the-fact focusing in your next smartphone camera? Well, you'll have to wait around a year, but Toshiba's planning exactly that with a new module that houses an array of 500,000 tiny lenses. Within a 1cm-thick unit, these lenses are layered in front of the camera sensor, which can capture slightly different images from each lens arrangement. Those picture can then be combined in a "complete" picture using Toshiba's own software. Apparently, the camera will also be able to measure the distance between objects in the shot -- similar to how 3D images are captured -- with the user then able to shift focus between close and distant detail, or even create images that are in-focus throughout. Toshiba says the module will also be able to capture video with a similar degree of focus management -- something that Lytro hasn't got around to just yet. The sensor is still a work in progress, but the manufacturer plans to commercialize the module before the end of 2013. Toshiba is looking to ally itself with multiple smartphone (and tablet) makers -- and here's hoping that it finds its way into a device outside of Japan.

[Thanks Franck]

Almanac Online : Second act for M-A performing arts center

Bookmark and Share
Menlo Park may turn to an outside partner to get the most out of the city's $2.6 million investment in the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center (PAC).

Catherine Carlton, who served on the Parks and Recreation Commission before winning a seat on the City Council this November, said her research into Bay Area event venues uncovered a local connection -- Eric Lochtefeld, who owns the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, grew up in Menlo Park and attended Menlo-Atherton High School.

A potential partnership resulted from their conversation: With 492 seats, the PAC offers a mid-sized venue that fills a gap in Mr. Lochtefeld's business, while he has the expertise to refer performers to the PAC as well as handle promotions and ticket sales, according to Ms. Carlton. The center could also provide a rehearsal space for Broadway by the Bay performers, giving students a chance to learn alongside theater professionals.

"Some of the really big promoters won't necessarily be a good fit, since Fox handles the administration and they already have really tight connections with groups like Ticketmaster. But for some independent acts, comedians and things like that, then this is the appropriate fit," Ms. Carlton said, noting that specific details of any arrangement have yet to be worked out.

Mr. Lochtefeld said he's turned down offers from other cities to take over their venues because the company has its hands full hosting 150 events a year at the Fox, but he has a soft spot for his hometown. "My wife and I cannot assure the City of Menlo Park that promoters we refer will book shows or that we will promote and produce our own shows in Menlo Park, but Cat has done a terrific job of paying attention to what is going on, reaching out to us, and laying the foundation for us to do business in that venue," he said in an email.

Menlo Park shared the cost of building the center with Menlo-Atherton High School in exchange for 55 days of rent-free use during the school year, and unlimited access during school vacations. But as the Almanac previously reported, the city only averages between 11 and 36 days of use per year since the theater opened in 2009.

In 2011 the city briefly experimented with another agency, Prime Time Entertainment, to provide sound equipment, event coordination, and staffing. But the association fell apart without sufficient marketing by the city and a dearth of available PAC dates.

Scheduling remains challenging. "We had one opportunity come up already, but it conflicted with a school event so we couldn't do anything with it," Ms. Carlton said. Still, a new manager in charge of scheduling onboard at the PAC may help, and the school is also trying to publish its schedule earlier so the city can plan its own use.

To help address the issue of costs, in October the city announced a new grants program to award $500 to $1,000 each year to up to five community groups to subsidize rental of the theater. Staff has recommended that the first round of grants go to the Menlo Park Chorus; Kepler's Arts/Lectures, the new nonprofit events arm of the iconic local bookstore; Menlowe Ballet; Western Ballet; and West Bay Opera. The Parks and Recreation Commission was scheduled to vote on the recipients on Dec. 19, but did not have a quorum, according to Commissioner James Cebrian.

He sounded enthusiastic about potentially working with the Fox Theatre, saying the commission has been exploring public-private partnerships. "Though it is early in the process, I am very optimistic that Cat's work to bring the Fox Theatre and the city together will result in a fruitful collaboration."

Bill Moyers: The Most Underreported News Story of 2012 is...

It's easy enough to compile a "best" and "worst" list, but what about bringing attention to important issues that went largely unreported in 2012?

That's the challenge we posed to editorial leaders from Alternet, Truthout, The Root, Common Dreams, and TomDispatch when we asked them to share what they consider the most underreported issue of 2012. Some of the answers will still surprise you.

See excerpts below, and visit the latest "Group Think" at BillMoyers.com for complete responses, and to share your own suggestions.

"The great underreported story of 2012 is the accelerated spread of poverty and concentration of wealth in the United States."
-- Don Hazen, Executive Editor of Alternet
"As the unconventional oil and gas drilling rapidly industrializes rural areas across the nation, the lessons of Bayou Corne will be crucial to draw upon. The full story of America's current oil and gas rush cannot be told without the voices of the people living in areas impacted by the industry."
-- Maya Schenwar, Executive Director of Truthout
"If you asked me 25 years ago how people would react when we found a way to prevent HIV infection, I would have predicted dancing in the streets and widespread news coverage."
-- Sheryl Huggins Salomon, Managing Editor of The Root
"As long as meaningful action on climate change will hurt the short-term profits of the fossil fuel industries, the media conglomerates and Wall Street, we can't expect the media blackout to end..."
-- Craig Brown, Founder and Director of Common Dreams
"The real reporting crisis involves the inability of the mainstream to connect the dots, almost any dots, or display any kind of historical memory."
-- Tom Engelhardt, Editor of The Nation Institute's TomDispatch

Bells toll for victims one week after shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The chiming of bells reverberated throughout Newtown on Friday, commemorating one week since the crackle of gunfire in a schoolhouse killed 20 children and six adults in a massacre that has shaken the community ? and the nation ? to its core.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy gathered with other officials in rain and wind on the steps of the town hall as the bell rang 26 times in memory of each life lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman also killed his mother before the massacre, and himself afterward.

Officials didn't plan any formal remarks Friday morning, and similar commemorations took place throughout the country.

Though the massacre does not rank as the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history ? that happened at Virginia Tech ? the tender age of the victims and the absence of any apparent motive has struck at Americans' hearts and minds. The gunman used a military-style assault rifle loaded with ammunition intended to inflict maximum damage, officials have said.

The White House said President Barack Obama privately observed the moment of silence.

Just a week after the attack, gun control has taken a front burner in Congress, where previous mass shootings produced only minimal legislative reaction. Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that the Obama administration would push to tighten gun laws.

The National Rifle Association plans a Friday morning news conference, its first public event since the shootings. The nation's largest gun-rights lobby with 4.3 million members has said it will offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

Traffic stopped in the streets outside the town hall in Newtown as bells rang out to honor the dead.

Malloy, taking deep breaths with his hands folded in front of him, was joined by the Newtown superintendent of schools, lawmakers and other officials as bells rang out at the nearby Trinity Episcopal Church.

Among those who came out to observe the ceremony was Edie Hardwick, 66, of Middlebury, Conn.

"It's such a horrific thing. Such a horrible thing. Everybody wants to do what they can," she said.

Pat Papuga, 60, came from Branford with a box full of candy canes tied with ribbons that said 'sandy hook angels,' which she dropped off at a coffee shop to give away to town's children.

"We just wanted to be here where everything happened to pay our respects. We just wanted to bring a little something to show that we care."

When the bells tolled mournfully to honor the victims of last week's shooting rampage, they did so 26 times, for each child and staff member killed.

Rarely do residents mention the first person police said Adam Lanza killed that morning: his mother, Nancy, who was shot in the head four times while she lay in bed.

That makes 27.

A private funeral was held Thursday in New Hampshire for Nancy Lanza, according to Donald Briggs, the police chief in Kingston, N.H., where her funeral was held. About 25 family members attended the ceremony.

In Newtown, where makeshift memorials of stuffed animals, angels, candles, flowers and balloons have blossomed on patches of grass throughout town, there is only one noticeable tribute to Nancy Lanza. It's a letter written by a friend on yellow paper affixed, screwed and shellacked onto a red piece of wood.

"Others now share pain for choices you faced alone; May the blameless among us throw the first stone," it reads in part.

No one outwardly blames Nancy Lanza for the rampage. But authorities have said the gunman, her 20-year-old son Adam, used the guns she kept at their home to carry out a massacre that became the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history and has stirred lawmakers to call for gun control laws.

Nationwide, churches were to ring their bells Friday morning. Two gold balloons, one a 2, the other a 6, are tied to a bridge. Handwritten tributes mention 26 snowflakes. "26 angels will guide us," reads one.

The dearth of tributes to Nancy Lanza underscores the complicated mix of emotions surrounding her after the shooting.

In a small town where multiple funerals are taking place each day, where black-clad mourners stand in lines waiting to say goodbye to another child, many are incredibly angry at Nancy Lanza for not keeping her guns away from her son.

Some view her as a victim, but one whose guns were used to kill first-graders. And others think Nancy Lanza was an innocent victim, one who should be counted and included at memorials.

"It's a loss of life and, yes, her life mattered," said Christine Lombardi. "Yes, I do believe she should be included."

Others in Newtown are weary of the crush of media and have become reluctant to answer questions after a difficult week. But the subject of marking Nancy Lanza's death, along with those of the children and teachers killed by her son, seemed mainly to surprise two moms who stopped to place flowers at the memorial at Main and Sugar streets with their two grammar-school aged girls.

They paused, appeared bewildered, and looked at each other for a moment. Then one quietly said, "No, no," and they each took a girl's hand and led them away.

Newtown and environs weathered a fourth day of funerals Thursday as mourners laid to rest Catherine Hubbard, Benjamin Wheeler, Jesse Lewis and Allison Wyatt, all 6 years old; and Grace McDonnell, 7.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was one of the people to visit Newtown on Thursday, stopping by a firehouse.

Biden, who is overseeing the administration's response to last week's shooting, said he and Obama are "absolutely committed" to curbing gun violence in the United States.

"Even if we can only save one life, we have to take action," he said.

Gun-control measures have faced fierce resistance in Congress for years, but that may be changing because of the events in Connecticut, which shocked the nation.

After the shooting, Obama signaled for the first time that he's willing to spend significant political capital on the issue. Some prominent gun-rights advocates on Capitol Hill ? Democrats and Republicans alike ? have expressed willingness to consider new measures.

Investigators have said that Nancy Lanza, a gun enthusiast, visited shooting ranges several times and that her son also visited an area range.

Authorities say Adam Lanza shot his mother at their home and then took her car and some of her guns to the school, where he broke in and opened fire. A Connecticut official said Nancy Lanza was shot four times in the head with a .22-caliber rifle.

Adam Lanza was wearing all black, with an olive-drab utility vest, during the school attack. Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the rampage.

Friends and acquaintances have described him as intelligent, but odd and quiet.

Friends said he would stare down at the floor and not speak when she brought him into a local pizzeria. They knew that he'd switched schools more than once and that she'd tried home schooling him. But while she occasionally expressed concern about his future during evenings at the bar, she never complained.

"I heard her as a parent. I always said that I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. But I thought, 'Wow. She holds it well,'" said Jon Tambascio, son of the pizzeria operator.

Advantages of Bi-Folding Patio Doors | Home Improvement - Darrel ...

Bi-folding patio doors look good, make your garden more accessible and bring more of the outside to the inside.

Patio doors have developed recently from fully glazed but basic sliding doors to the modern bi-folding patio doors. Originally bi-folding doors were considered a luxury product, but lately advances in technology have made them more accessible. Though still a bit more expensive than basic sliding doors, the benefits of bi-folding patio doors far outweigh the initial cost.

So what are the benefits of Bi- folding doors?

Open living ? They can fold right back to allow outside/inside living. Bi-folding patio doors fold right back making the best of your space. This allows for a sense of freedom, and on a sunny day you can open up your home opening access to a whole other space.

Ease of installation ? if you are installing a new patio door in your garden, but can?t access the back of the property, bi-folding patio doors can be carried through the house to the site of installation. Other patio doors do not have the same folding capability.

Home Improvement ? with many homeowners deciding to stay put in the current economic climate, many people are choosing to improve their current properties. By installing bi-folding doors one can make your home more accessible to the garden, which could radically change the way you use it.

Be Flexible ? One might also use bi-folding doors inside the home. As they can openinto or out of a room, or fold to the left or the right, they will cause little disturbance to your home without disrupting natural light either.

Easy to use ? bifold doors use a free-glide system which is almost frictionless due to the advanced needle roller bearings. This makes them hard wearing and easy to use.

Different designs ? There are numerous design options to choose from. Select from a wide range of colours, including a metallic or even wooden effect. Your bi-folding patio doors will be able to blend into your home and become a real feature.

Safety features ? Installing bi-folding patio doors to allow your children more access to the garden? Most bi-folding patio doors come with finger-safe gaskets to protect from trapped fingers!

Security ? Bi-folding patio doors can feature multi-point locking systems, internally beaded frames, high-security hinges and anti-drill key cylinders. All of these features will help keep your home safe and protected.

tulsidas toenail: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Climate modelers predict warmer, wetter Northeast U.S. winters by 2070

Dec. 12, 2012 ? A new high-resolution climate study by University of Massachusetts Amherst climate scientists, the first to apply regional climate models to examine likely near-term changes in temperature and precipitation across the Northeast United States, suggests temperatures are going to be significantly warmer in all seasons in the next 30 years, especially in winter. Also, they project that winters will be wetter, with more rain likely than snow.

Writing in the current issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research, Michael Rawlins and Raymond Bradley of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst, with Henry Diaz of NOAA's Climate Diagnostics Center, Boulder, Colo., provide the highest resolution climate projections to date for the Northeast from Pennsylvania to Maine for the period 2041 to 2070. The study used data from multiple climate model simulations run at greatly improved resolution.

Rawlins says, "One of the most important aspects of our study is that we can now examine in more detail what's likely to occur across the region with a grid size of approximately 31 x 31 miles (50 x 50 km). Previous studies used much more coarse-scale general circulation model data. This represents a significant step forward."

Bradley adds, "Regional climate models have been around for a while, but they have not been applied specifically to the Northeast region. At this point what we can provide are 'broad brush' estimates of how things will change over the next 30 to 50 years. People should not over-interpret these results. Further research is needed to scale these down to individual locations. But for natural resource conservation managers, water resource managers and others responsible for planning ahead, we expect our region-specific results will be helpful."

Overall, the researchers say the region is projected to warm by some 2 to 3 degrees C by mid century, with local changes approaching 3.5 degrees C in winter. Precipitation will go up as well, particularly in winter, but again not uniformly across the Northeast. The UMass Amherst climate scientists say confidence in the precipitation change projections for spring, summer and autumn is lower, given smaller changes relative to natural weather variability.

"The only clear signal of change for precipitation is noted in winter, which appears to be heading toward wetter conditions, consistent with current trends," Rawlins says. Winter precipitation is projected to rise significantly above natural weather variability, around 12 to 15 percent greater from southwest Pennsylvania to northern Maine, with the exception of coastal areas, where projected increases are lower.

"But we shouldn't expect more total seasonal snowfall," he adds. "Combined with the model-projected temperature trends, much of the increase will occur as rain. We're losing the snow season. It is contracting, with more rain in early and late winter."

For this study funded by NOAA, Rawlins and Bradley used available outputs from an ensemble of regional climate models (RCM) from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program to look at potential changes in seasonal air temperature and precipitation between the present, (1971 to 2000), and a future period, (2041 to 2070) across the Northeast. They performed a rigorous evaluation of each model's ability to represent current climate by comparing its outputs to actual weather station data.

The projections assume that greenhouse gas emissions will continue to rise, increasing atmospheric CO2 from about 400 parts per million (ppm) today to between 500 and 600 ppm in 2070. Bradley and Rawlins acknowledge that this outlook represents the "most aggressive, most troubling higher emissions trajectory scenario" for CO2 levels, but they point out that so far there is little evidence that society will act to appreciably change the current rate of increase.

Each of the five RCMs were forced with data from two general circulation models (GCM), yielding nine GCM-RCM simulations. This provided a rich suite of data for climate change analysis, the scientists say. GCM forcings are applied at the boundaries of the North American region, with RCMs then taking over, resulting in much higher-resolution depictions of precipitation and air temperature than would have been possible using the GCMs alone.

Results show statistically significant increases in air temperature region-wide for every grid in each season, but the changes are not uniform. For example, the models collectively project air temperature changes in winter of more than 3 degrees C (5.5 degrees F) across northern Maine, all of New Hampshire, Vermont and the Adirondacks, representing about 50 percent of the Northeast region. In some local areas, the increase could be near 4 degrees C (7.2 degrees F).

By contrast, winter air temperatures increases in southwest Pennsylvania are projected to be lower, only about 2.4 degrees C. In summer, the pattern is reversed and the southwest quadrant of the northeast is projected to be warmer and the changes higher.

BreastCancer.org: Ardmore-based breast cancer awareness site ...

BreastCancer.org, a nonprofit dedicated to breast cancer awareness and education, has been on the up and up since it was founded more than a decade ago. This year, it projects more than 15 million hits and says it has reached visitors from more than 200 different countries. It?s also won more than a dozen awards, including seven ?Best Site Design? awards from the eHealthcare Leadership Awards.

But you might be surprised to learn that the the eight-person staff is based right outside of Philly in the suburb of Ardmore.

Visit the site here.

Founded by local breast cancer oncologist Marisa Weiss in 2000, the site aims to provide the most up-to-date and reliable information about breast health and breast cancer, including its symptoms, treatments and how to handle day-to-day matters as a woman diagnosed with breast cancer. BreastCancer.org features articles and tips written by the site?s staff and freelancers, as well as an active community discussion board with nearly 120,000 registered users. As of last year, the site also publishes its core content in Spanish.

The nonprofit is funded by a number of sources including events, corporations and online banners, but primarily by individuals, in-kind donations and corporations, according to information provided by BreastCancer.org?s Director of Marketing Pamela Green.

It?s a separate organization altogether from the other various research, foundation and fundraising efforts dedicated to combating breast cancer, but the educational and community elements of BreastCancer.org stands out, says the staff.

The BreastCancer.org website was designed by Foraker Labs, a Boulder, Colo.-based web dev shop.

Movie review: Documentary highlights Vreeland?s fashionable life

By Sean P. Means

Filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland never met her famous grandmother-in-law, the fashion editor Diana Vreeland, but her documentary "Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" makes viewers feel as if they had.

The film chronicles the wild life of Vreeland, who worked a quarter-century as fashion editor of Harper?s Bazaar followed by a landmark stretch as editor-in-chief of Vogue. In her career, she discovered Twiggy, advised Jackie Kennedy Onassis and forever melded fashion to celebrity.

?Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel?

Opens Friday, Dec. 7, at the Broadway Centre Cinemas; PG-13 for some nude images; 86 minutes.

The film draws heavily on Vreeland?s voice ? in archival interview footage and an extended Q-and-A session with George Plimpton (for a project to write her memoirs) ? and her fascinating tall tales. The result is a lively portrait that?s as colorful, dynamic and oh-so-fashionable as one of Vreeland?s magazine spreads.

10 Businesses We Admire for Brilliant Global Marketing

10 Businesses We Admire for Brilliant Global Marketing

.

global marketing informationintermediate

Just a few weeks ago,?we looked at the ins-and-outs of Facebook's new Global Pages -- a platform for?brands to easily share region-specific content with international markets. Dankesch?n, Facebook. No longer is global reach reserved for deep-pocketed brands, nor is it an incredible hassle for already over-burdened social media and community managers.

In fact, a global presence is possible for any business with a creative strategy and an understanding of world markets. To give you an idea of what a great global marketing strategy looks like, we've compiled some brands that totally "get it." Take a look at ten companies which have traveled successfully across the globe with their marketing!

1) Airbnb

Airbnb is the Craigslist of apartment rentals. The company, launched in 2008 out of San Francisco, has taken its national service to 192 countries for users to rent short-term apartments from other users. How did this start-up grow up so quickly? Unlike Craigslist, Airbnb has a fun, more user-friendly website that showcases the brand's transparent, trusting personality. The website is now available in 21 languages with consistent information, style, and personality to appeal to like-minded users across cultures. Notice the carryover between this page, for example:

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 19 at 10.31.59 AM resized 600

?

And this page:

?

global airbnb

?

You're looking at Airbnb's mobile app page in both German and English. The brand tailored the headline to fit the language: in English, it reads '...at your fingertips' but in German it reads '...on your cellphone' using the less formal term for cellphone, 'Handy'. The brand tweaks its content to best suit the culture, but it's still obvious which brand you're interacting with regardless of language. And I think this global focus is working -- in 2011, Airbnb rentals in Italy saw a 946% increase and the UK at 748%. The company also opened 9 overseas offices in the past 4 years to accomodate its growing global presence. Having a strong, consistent voice across languages is a key factor when going global. ?

2) Rezdy

Some companies may not be trying to attract global markets directly, but if their clients are, they better know how. Rezdy is an Australian-based reservation software designed to make online booking smoother for tourists and agents alike, a valuable tool when over 60% of travellers make reservations online.?Though Rezdy's clients are Australian-based, they need to cater to their clients' international visitors. Click on the screen shot to check out this fun video on Rezdy's homepage:

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 20 at 1.36.08 AM resized 600?

The first feature the video spotlights is 'Internationalisation.' The video walks us through how easy the service is for users, but is sure to emphasize the language and currency customization tool upfront. Even if your company is marketing to other regional companies, consider their global customers as if they were your own.?

3) World Wildlife Foundation

WWF took its Earth Hour initiative, a voluntary worldwide event where participants turn off their lights for an hour to show how easy it can be to battle climate change, and brought it to Norway's mobile audience (1 in 4 Norwegians have 3G mobile access).

Scandanavian countries like Norway experience extreme daylight hours throughout seasons, making the country ready for WWF's Blackout campaign.?Using digital agency Mobiento, the nonprofit placed the Blackout Banner across Norway's top media sites to promote Earth Hour. With one tap of the banner, the screen went black. Finger swiping the black screen slowly revealed the Earth Hour countdown. The banner attracted roughly 1,000,000 impressions and the campaign received three 2012 MMA Global Mobile Marketing Awards.?

Case: Black out rich media banner for WWF Earth Hour from Mobiento.

Have a cool idea? Don't be afraid to try it out on one international market -- just make sure it's the appropriate audience. Also, don't be afraid of the dark.?

4) Durex

The UK-based condom manufacturer is number one in the industry with 34% market share across 130 countries. Sure, sex sells, but how does Durex sell such a taboo product in foreign countries??All jokes aside, Durex is sure to play it safe. The company developed an internal platform for its marketers from different countries to connect and discuss the brand's presence overseas.

Anna Valle, head of global marketing for Durex, said of the online community, "It will help us to share the global vision, to engage, and be more consistent." Discussion among marketers fuels localized campaigns with an overarching brand personality -- risque. For example, check out this recent image Durex shared on Sina Weibo after President Obama had been re-elected. (Fair warning: if you don't like raunchy and/or political humor, don't click.) 12 hours after being posted, the image was forwarded 43,000 times with over 12,000 comments.

5) Pearse Trust

With offices in Dublin, London, Vancouver, and Atlanta, Pearse Trust has grown to be a global authority on corporate and trust structures. But it takes more than offices all over the map to reach an international audience. That's why Pearse Trust keeps content flowing on its Facebook page that engages its various markets. In this screenshot below, you can see Pearse Trust posts daily content featuring international affairs relating to the company's practice.

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 20 at 1.06.07 AM resized 600

?

Within 3 days, Pearse Trust made daily Facebook posts, leveling out external articles with Pearse Trust content, featuring news from Germany, Ireland (where they have a Dublin office), and the UK (where they have a London office). This is a great example of focusing on common interests shared among your company's various markets while making the content relateable to customers by region.?

6) McDonald's

We all know it's a successul global brand, so unlike their menu, I'll keep it light. While keeping its overarching branding consistent, Mcdonald's practices 'glocal' marketing efforts. No, that's not a typo. McDonald's brings a local flavor, literally, to different countries with region-specific menu items. In 2003, McDonald's introduced the McArabia, a flatbread sandwich, to its restaurants in the Middle East.

?

MCARABIA CHICK

?

You can also find the McVeggie in India or the EBI-Fillet-O shrimp burger in Japan. This glocal approach has helped put McDonald's at #7 on Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2012. ?

7) Innocent Drinks

Innocent Drinks is the leading smoothie company in the UK with 75% of the market share in 2011 -- additionally, Innocent products are now available in 13 countries across Europe. The company is known to have "chatty branding"; for instance, the website is very bubbly with contact information that reads "call the bananaphone" or "visit the Fruit Towers."

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 16 at 12.08.38 AM

?

The brand won the #1 spot on Headstream's Social Brands 100 for its entertaining and playful online presence. Headstream attributes Innocent's online success to keeping the brand's personality in tact across 13 countries. "Key to Innocent's success," they said, "has been a consistent tone of voice -- one that's natural, honest, and engaging -- making social activity feel like a natural extension of the company's personality."

Global expansion and rapid growth can sometimes distract a company from consistent branding. As marketers, we need to be sure our brand's voice is interpreted the same way around the world.? ? ?

8) Unger and Kowitt

The phrase 'glocal' can be defined as "Think Globally, Act Locally." But what happens when you switch the two around? Woah, fasten your seatbelts -- literally. Unger and Kowitt is a traffic ticket law firm based in Fort Lauderdale defending drivers in the state of Florida. Not very global, right? Well, Unger and Kowitt understands that America is a melting pot and that Florida is bursting at the seams with different cultures and languages.

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 19 at 5.02.35 PM

?

Though a domestic service, the firm's website is available in English, Spanish, Portugese, and Creole. With these options, Unger and Kowitt can cater to Florida's nearly 3.5 million Floridians who speak Spanish, Portugese, or Creole. Don't miss out on expanding your client base -- sometimes you don't have to look far to attract international business.?

9) Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola is a great example of a brand using glocal marketing efforts. Though a large corporation, Coca-Cola focuses on small community programs and invests a lot of time and money in small-scale charity efforts. For example, in Egypt, Coca-Cola has built 650 clean water installations in the rural village of Beni Suef and sponsors Ramadan meals for children across the Middle East. In India, the brand sponsors the Support My School initiative to improve facilities at local schools. Not to mention, the brand sticks with selling an emotion that can't get lost in translation: happiness. Now, tell me this doesn't look like fun:

?

10) Results.com?

Ten points at #10 for Results.com, a business execution firm with offices in New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. This global company knows the importance of delivering on your promise, no matter how far that delivery may take you. On the website, Results.com says "We have global influence" and can provide "face to face consulting to companies from around the world."

?

Screen Shot 2012 11 20 at 12.04.48 AM resized 600? ?

Results.com does, in fact, bring face to face consulting to its customers. The company is bringing John Spence, marketing consultant and guru, from Florida to New Zealand in March 2013 to share his ideas with CEOs and business managers in the region. Since November 2010, the company's website traffic has increased by 180%.?I wouldn't be surprised if events like this are generating buzz down under!

What other brands out there do a great job with their global marketing?
