Movie review: Documentary highlights Vreeland?s fashionable life

Filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland never met her famous grandmother-in-law, the fashion editor Diana Vreeland, but her documentary "Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" makes viewers feel as if they had.

The film chronicles the wild life of Vreeland, who worked a quarter-century as fashion editor of Harper?s Bazaar followed by a landmark stretch as editor-in-chief of Vogue. In her career, she discovered Twiggy, advised Jackie Kennedy Onassis and forever melded fashion to celebrity.

?Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel?

Opens Friday, Dec. 7, at the Broadway Centre Cinemas; PG-13 for some nude images; 86 minutes.

The film draws heavily on Vreeland?s voice ? in archival interview footage and an extended Q-and-A session with George Plimpton (for a project to write her memoirs) ? and her fascinating tall tales. The result is a lively portrait that?s as colorful, dynamic and oh-so-fashionable as one of Vreeland?s magazine spreads.
