PARIS (AP) ? A video apparently showing a Muslim gunman's attacks on soldiers and a Jewish school was sent to the Al-Jazeera television network but not by him, French police said Tuesday, raising the specter of a possible accomplice.

Al-Jazeera on Tuesday decided not to air a video that seems to have been filmed from the killer's point of view and includes the cries of his victims. The decision came after President Nicolas Sarkozy asked them not to broadcast it.

A French official close to the investigation said it was not sent by Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman who was killed in a shootout Thursday after a 32-hour standoff with police at his apartment building in Toulouse.

Another official said the envelope sent to Al-Jazeera contained a Wednesday postmark from a large postal processing center for the area around Toulouse, meaning it was unclear exactly where it was mailed from. He could not say anything about who may have sent the video.

The first official said a technical analysis had concluded that it was not sent by Merah but did not indicate whether that analysis included fingerprints, DNA, surveillance or other data.

Merah was surrounded in his apartment since a pre-dawn police raid Wednesday. Police did not elaborate on why they think he did not put the package into the mail before then.

Prosecutors have said that Merah filmed all of his attacks, which began March 11 with the murder of a French soldier. Before the spree ended, two more soldiers and three Jewish children and a rabbi were killed, while another student and another paratrooper were wounded.

Police said Merah claimed the attacks and had told them he had links to al-Qaida, traveled to Afghanistan and received weapons training in the militant Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan.

Sarkozy has called the attacks isolated acts of violence, the work of a "lone wolf" ? but investigators have questioned some of Merah's claims and say they are open to the possibility of accomplices.

Preliminary charges for complicity in murder and terrorism have been filed against Merah's older brother, Abdelkader, though no evidence has emerged that he took part directly in the shooting.

It was not clear if Abdelkader could have sent the video. Police first detained him as they carried out Wednesday's early raid.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

"What we know is that it (the video) was reassembled. Things were added in. We don't know if the full sequence was in it. But it was not just the video as it was filmed. There was an editing process and additions made," the first official said.

Zied Tarrouche, Al-Jazeera's Paris bureau chief, said the video had clearly been edited, with religious songs and recitations of Quranic verses laid over the footage.

The footage appeared to have been taken from the point of view of the killer, perhaps from a camera hung around his neck, according Tarrouche, who described the video to BFM television station. He said they were a bit shaky but of a high technical quality.

"You can hear gunshots at the moment of the killings. You can hear the voice of this person who has committed these assassinations. You can hear also the cries of the victims, and the voices were distorted," Tarrouche said.

The footage was contained on a USB key sent with a letter to the Paris office of the Qatar-based television company, Tarrouche said. The letter, written in poor French with spelling and grammar errors, claimed the shootings were carried out in the name of al-Qaida. The second official said it was hand written in all capital letters.

The channel said the video was received from an anonymous source on Monday and immediately passed it on to French police. It decided not to show the images.

"In accordance with Al Jazeera's Code of Ethics, given the video does not add any information that is not already in the public domain, its news channels will not be broadcasting any of its contents," the broadcaster said in a statement.

Al-Jazeera said it had received many requests by media to look at the video but it would deny all of them.

That decision came after Sarkozy, other French officials and family members of the victims had asked that it not be broadcast.

"I ask the managers of all television stations that might have these images not to broadcast them in any circumstances, out of respect for the victims ? out of respect for the Republic," Sarkozy said Tuesday.

Tarrouche said the Paris prosecutor, whose office is leading the investigation, had also called to explain the consequences of disseminating the images. But Tarrouche said the prosecutor said he would not prohibit the channel from "doing its work as journalists."

Al-Jazeera was frequently used early in the Iraq and Afghan wars as a conduit for militants, including Osama bin Laden, to distribute taped statements. As the Iraq war progressed, many of these tapes included gruesome killings and beheadings of Western or foreign hostages, although the station edited out some of the grisliest scenes at the moment of death.

The broadcasts drew outrage, especially from the U.S. government. Over time, most militant groups opted instead for posting such videos on their own websites, where they were not subject to outside editing.

Meanwhile, Merah's father, who was estranged from his son and lives in Algeria, has reportedly said he wants to file a complaint for Mohamed's death. In his address, Sarkozy expressed outrage at that idea.

Sarkozy, in the middle of a tough re-election campaign, has announced a raft of new measures aimed at preventing the spread and incubation of radical ideas, including penalizing those who regularly consult websites that promote jihad.

On Tuesday, he said wanted to speed up the process of expelling radicals from France as well as prevent them from ever entering.

"Extremists are playing with our administrative formalities. Our job is to be more efficient," he said. "Preachers who continually target our system can stay where they are. We don't want them on the soil of the French Republic."

Meanwhile, another brother, Abdelghani, told a religious representative that the family wants Mohamed Merah's body to be buried in Algeria.

The funeral home was to make the request Tuesday with the Algerian consulate, and the body would be transferred Thursday if the authorization is granted, Abdallah Zekri, a representative of the Paris Mosque in charge of Toulouse.

Abdelghani Merah initially wanted the body buried in France, but insisted he would not attend any funeral of his younger brother, "who he considers a monster," according to Zekri.

Ultimately the brother gave in to his mother's wishes, Zekri said.

I am having a hard time eating normal foods. I lost a great deal of weight over the last year or so just by portion control. I ate normal food, just less of it. I got very used to eating this way. My weight is down to normal now.

I BELIEVED that I had not just crash dieted thin, but had changed my lifestyle, as far as the way I eat goes. I thought I had the problem under control by eating less. Unfortunately, my urge to eat ?mass quantities? is returning (after I deviated from my eating routine for vacation) and for the last 10 weeks or so, since vacation, I am binging on tons of dietary food ? low cal, low sugar, low fat foods that come from the diet section of the store. If I was eating ?normal? food in the volume I eat this diet food, I would have gained all my weight back by now. This is killing my morale. I see I will never control my eating by normal means. I feel like talking to a counselor or doctor about this, but really hate to.

Has anyone else ever faced this problem?

Egypt's Coptic pope buried, Christians anxious

WADI NATROUN, Egypt (AP) ? Pope Shenouda III, an giant figure for 40 years at the helm of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church, was laid to rest on Tuesday in a desert monastery after a moving funeral Mass at a Cairo cathedral attended by tens of thousands.

Shenouda died Saturday at age 88 after serving for four decades as head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, one of the world's oldest Christian denominations. Most of Egypt's Christians are Orthodox Copts.

"I know he is now in a better place, but it is difficult now he's gone. We miss you!" said a grief-stricken Marianne Saad as she stood with the thousands who followed the Mass outside the cathedral, carrying portraits of Shenouda and crosses. Many of them wept, wiping tears from their faces as the melancholic tunes of the hymns reached them through loudspeakers.

"He will always be in our hearts," said a young Christian man, Hani Suleiman.

The grief and anxiety traveled with the pope to the desert monastery of St. Bishoy northwest of Cairo, where he was buried in a white marble grave in the evening. Thousands of the faithful camped outside the monastery from the small morning hours to catch a glimpse of his casket.

Chaotic scenes erupted when a convoy of cars accompanying an ambulance carrying Shenouda's body arrived at the monastery before sunset. Military policemen struggled to control thousands of mourners who tried to push their way to the ambulance. Many in the crowd outside the monastery's walls tried to get inside when the convoy arrived, but soldiers kept them out.

Nearly an hour later, Shenouda's body was interred with a cross over it and covered with white flowers. Monks and laymen filled the burial chamber, and some of them ripped flowers off the cross to keep as souvenirs. Some used their cellular phone cameras to snap pictures or record the event in video.

The monastery, which dates back to the 4th century, was a favorite of Shenouda's. He spent more than three years of exile there after he was banished in 1981 by then-President Anwar Sadat, who claimed the patriarch was fomenting sectarian strife. Sadat's successor, Mubarak, released the pope in 1985.

"He was our safety valve," said a woman in her 40s who refused to give her name. "We went to sleep every night knowing that he has our back. Now, I don't know who can give us this again."

Shenouda's death, as the case has consistently been when Christians are in a crisis, has triggered a wave of sympathy by Muslims wishing to share the grief with their compatriots over the loss of a man who was at the helm of one of the world's most ancient churches.

From military leader Hussein Tantawi ? who declared a nationwide state of mourning on Tuesday ? to parliament speaker Saad el-Katatni, Cabinet ministers and lawmakers, almost everyone who matters in Egypt was quoted by the media as saying something positive and warm about the pope and the magnitude of his loss to the nation.

"In general, I felt a great deal of genuine passion and sadness by Muslims," said Mamdouh Nakhla, a Christian who heads a private rights group, al-Kalimah. "But there has always been something not quite right between Muslims and Christians in Egypt. That something has doubled or tripled with the rise of Islamists."

The Muslim Brotherhood, the nation's largest political group, and the ultraconservative Salafis won over 70 percent of parliament's seats between them in recent elections, giving them the kind of power that is likely to impact one way or another on the nation's 10 million Christians.

The Brotherhood's trademark pragmatism would likely help find an accommodation for the Christians in the country's new order, if only because the group fears a backlash in the West, particularly the United States, if it mistreats the Christians.

During his years as patriarch, Shenouda strove to ensure his place among the main players in this mainly Muslim nation, pressing demands behind the scenes while keeping Christian anger over violence and discrimination in check. It was a delicate balancing act.

Egyptian authorities deny any discrimination, but Christians say it happens in numerous and subtle ways. Christians, for example, rarely receive leadership jobs on the police force, particularly the security agencies. The Islamist-dominated parliament only has a handful of Christians, and there are never more than one or two Christians among 30-plus Cabinet ministers.

EMOTIONAL EATING: As you know I am on a health and fitness journey reclaiming me, myself, and matching my outside to my inside. So many people ask me how I am doing it and I respond with #1 lots of hard work and dedication! This journey is 1/3 emotional, 1/3 physical, 1/3 nutritional. I do plan on writing a blog post (or a book) on this journey and specifically what I did.

Am I truly physically hungry?
Is what I am about to eat going to nourish my body & healthy?
I need to eat for the body I want, not the one I have.
What is my goal and does this match my goal?
Nothing tastes as good, as being thin and healthy feels.

I wish I could go back in time and made myself and my health a priority after having kids. I think when we birth those babies we become martyrs and sacrifice everything including making ourselves a priority from basic daily maintenance like a shower or eating right to having me time and not feeling guilty about doing things not related to our kids and our families.

I would like to encourage women, men, and parents everywhere that if you take care of you, your mental health, and your physical health and make it a daily priority and focus you will be a better person and a better parent for those in your lives.

I will also tell you that it is damn hard work to lose a pound than to put on a pound. It is 100x times harder to take off each pound and it is blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen. There are no short cuts, because they don?t last. You need to eat right and work out hard enough to sweat each and every single day.

I am doing this for me and to make me happy! I want to reclaim my body and my life. I want to get back to my fighting weight and own the body that is naturally mine. I want to love and respect myself enough to continue on this path and journey. Please think about what you are eating and work out hard enough every day to sweat ? really sweat! Let me be a lesson and inspiration to you. You can start right now making the right decisions for you, your body, and your health!!

Obesity in The Elderly - Function Trumps Form? | Dr. Sharma's ...

Regular readers may recall previous posts on the issue of obesity (or excess weight) in the elderly and how the well-known obesity paradox, namely that skinny people with chronic diseases die first, confounds the interpretation of finding in this age group.

This topic is now extensively reviewed by Decaria and colleagues front the Lawson Health Research Institute, London, Ontario, in a paper just published by the International Journal of Obesity.

The authors identified almost 500 relevant research articles and came to the following main conclusions:

1) The current WHO (World Health Organization)-recommended body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio obesity thresholds for the general adult population may not be appropriate for older adults.

2) Weight change or physical fitness may be more useful measures of mortality and health risk in obese older adults.

3) Although, obesity in older adults is associated with several disorders that increase functional disability, epidemiological evidence suggests that obesity is protective against mortality in seniors.

4) As a result of point 3, the trend toward increasing prevalence of obesity in older adults will lead to an increase in unhealthy life years and health-care costs.

Based on their finding, the authors propose that

??treatment strategies for obese older adults should focus on maintaining body weight and improving physical fitness and function rather than weight loss, and that a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise appears to be the most effective strategy.?

Overall, an important message to clinicians with overweight and obese elderly clients: focus on fitness and function not on weight loss!

Voting in Alabama, Mississippi could clarify race

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is working to seal his status as the Republican presidential front-runner with a thus-far-elusive victory in the Deep South.

Closely fought primaries in Alabama and Louisiana offer the former Massachusetts governor a key opportunity in a region that has been slow to embrace him. Tuesday's primaries are also poised to render a possible final verdict on Newt Gingrich's Southern-focused candidacy.

With polls showing an unexpectedly tight race in the conservative bellwether states, Romney made a campaign appearance Monday in Alabama ? a clear indication he was eyeing a potential win there.

Romney campaigned with Southern comedian Jeff Foxworthy and poked fun at his own lack of hunting skills, saying he hoped to set out with an Alabama friend who "can actually show me which end of the rifle to point."

Battling anew to be Romney's main conservative challenger, Gingrich and Rick Santorum both spoke at an energy forum in Mississippi and took questions on religion in public life at a presidential forum in Birmingham, Ala. They took sharp aim at President Barack Obama, with Santorum labeling the president's foreign policy "pathetic" and Gingrich taunting Obama as "President Algae" for an energy speech in which Obama spoke of research that would allow oil and gas to be developed from algae one day.

Gingrich has focused his campaign in recent weeks on rising gas prices, promising to bring the price to $2.50 per gallon if elected.

The Southern showdown came as new polling showed a steep drop in Obama's approval ratings amid escalating prices at the pump and renewed turbulence in the Middle East.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 46 percent of those surveyed approve the way the president is handling his job, and 50 percent disapprove. A New York Times/CBS poll found 41 percent approval, and 47 percent disapproval.

A win in either Mississippi or Alabama would be an important breakthrough for Romney, easing concerns that the Harvard-educated Northeasterner cannot win the party's most conservative and evangelical voters. Romney did not plan to be in the state during voting Tuesday and was already looking ahead to contests in Missouri on Saturday and Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Santorum, who has angled to campaign head-to-head with Romney, pressed the case again that Gingrich should consider stepping aside.

"People of Mississippi and Alabama want a conservative," he told reporters in Biloxi. "If they want a conservative nominee for sure, they can do that by lining up behind us and making this race clearly a two-person race outside of the South."

Santorum planned to watch returns from Louisiana, which holds its primary March 24. He was also heading to Puerto Rico to campaign later in the week.

While Gingrich insists he plans to remain in the race until the Republican National Convention in August, his campaign's survival essentially rested on winning both Tuesday contests. The former House speaker has pursued an all-Southern strategy, but he has won only South Carolina and Georgia, the latter the state he represented in Congress for 20 years.

Gingrich planned several appearances in Alabama on Tuesday, including remarks to a local chamber of commerce and a visit to the Birmingham Zoo.

He seemed to draw new energy from an enthusiastic crowd at Birmingham forum. They gave him repeated standing ovations as he derided Obama for offering apologies earlier this month to Afghan President Hamid Karzai after American troops burned Islamic holy books, including some Qurans.

"He believes in apologizing to those who kill our young men and women. I will never apologize," Gingrich said to applause and cheers of "Newt! Newt! Newt!"

All three candidates were receiving support from well-heeled independent groups known as super PACs that were helping to finance television ads, automated phone calls and direct mail in the two states.

A fourth candidate, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, was not competing actively in the two contests.

Hawaii was also holding a primary Tuesday, but none of the GOP hopefuls campaigned there.

Romney has more delegates than his rivals combined, and is amassing them at a rate that puts him on track to clinch control of nomination before the convention opens next summer. The Associated Press tally shows him with 454 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination. Santorum has 217, Gingrich 107 and Paul 47.

Shares dip as China data spooks investors

The Australian share market has beat a retreat in thin trade amid further signs China's economy is slowing.

With a lack of local data releases today and public holidays in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, investors appeared to focus instead on news from overseas.

But positive employment data from the United States on the weekend and news that Greece had secured its second international bailout were not enough to boost sentiment after official figures showed China had posted its first trade deficit in 22 years in February.

China is normally a net exporter of goods, but last month imports surged 39.6 per cent year-on-year while exports rose 18.4 per cent.

This added to concerns after Chinese premier Wen Jiabao last week warned that China's economy would grow at its slowest rate in eight years this year.

The benchmark ASX 200 index dropped 0.4 per cent to 4,197 and the All Ordinaries index finished 0.3 per cent lower at 4,288.

The major miners struggled; Rio Tinto dropped 0.6 per cent to $63.74 and BHP Billiton finished flat at $34.71.

Fortescue Metals surged 3.9 per cent to $5.86.

"We are getting more confirmation of a slowdown in China," said CMC Markets strategist Ric Spooner.

"When one puts that in perspective for the Australian economy and resources, it does not look too strong in the short-term."

The big banks all dropped around 0.9 per cent except Commonwealth Bank, which fared slightly better for a loss of 0.5 per cent to $47.84.

And the retail sector continued on its downward trend; clothes maker Pacific Brands gave up 4.6 per cent to 62 cents, electronics discounters Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi both lost around 1 per cent and Myer eased 0.4 per cent.

David Jones was one of the few in the sector to see a positive result; its shares gained 1.5 per cent to $2.73.

Telstra shares also finished lower, losing 0.9 per cent to $3.22.

Phillips River Mining shed 38 per cent to 16 cents after Silver Lake Resources said it had called a stop to a proposed merger between the two companies.

The Australian dollar also suffered amid the gloom on China and at 4:45pm (AEDT) was buying 105.2 US cents, 86.5 Japanese yen, 67.2 British pence, 80.4 euro cents and $NZ1.29.

Tapis crude oil was higher at $US134.73 a barrel and West Texas crude oil was slightly lower at $US106.59 a barrel.

The spot gold price has dropped to $US1,704.85 an ounce.
