Introduction

Forty-five states in the USA have adopted the Common Core State Standards in both Mathematics and English Language Arts. There is a growing demand for various educational stakeholders to provide resources on the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. Both assessment consortia, Smarter Balance and PARCC, are developing technology-based assessments that will be administered in each state starting in 2014-2015. This book will include contributions from both educational technologists and mathematics educators providing examples of how digital technologies can support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

Objective of the Book

The objectives of this book are to:

1) Disseminate information about current digital technologies and how they can support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

2) Provide concrete examples appropriate for both K-12 education leaders and university leaders about how digital technologies can support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.Target Audience

The target audience of this book is educational leaders in the field of both Mathematics Education and Educational Technology. These include higher education faculty, educational researchers, and leaders at the State and District level, as well as others interested in the implementation of the Common Core State Mathematics Standards.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supporting the Common Core State Mathematics Standards (CCSSM)
    • How can technology support the implementation of the Content (Grade level) Standards?
    • How can technology support learners? work with the Standards for Mathematical Practice?
  • Evidence of Impact or Cases from the Field
    • Research reports or vignettes describing how technology has supported students? mathematical understanding
  • Assessment
    • What might assessment of the CCSSM look like in the 21st Century?
    • How can technology support student assessment regarding the CCSSM?
    • How can technology support teachers? decision making related to the CCSSM?
  • Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK)
    • How does the TPACK framework influence how technology can support the implementation of the CCSSM?
    • How does TPACK research influence the way we should support teachers and school districts? implementation of the CCSSM?
  • Contemporary Technologies Supporting the CCSSM
    • How can contemporary technologies support the implementation of the CCSSM?
      • Including: Handheld technologies, Web 2.0 tools, virtual manipulatives, simulations, dynamic geometry software (SketchPad, Geogebra), Statistics software (Fathom), Graphing Calculators, Data collection technologies (Probes, Sensors, etc.)
  • Issues and Implications
    • What educational issues and implications in regard to technologies must be addressed as we consider the implementation of the CCSSM?
    • What are the most pressing implications for practice in regard to technology and the CCSSM?
    • What are the most pressing implications for research in regard to technology and the CCSSM?

Submission Procedure

Interested authors are invited to submit on or before February 22, 2012, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and focus of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by March 1, 2012 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by May 1, 2012. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also serve as reviewers for this project.
